Favourite Band edition with Jason Sturgill
Tell me about your favorite band and how you came up with the idea for your Drip For Drip cup. I can never pick a favorite band, it’s too hard to choose. So instead I went with taking inspiration from an artist I’ve been listening to a lot lately. Jonathan Chibadura from Zimbabwe. I stumbled upon his music recently whilst searching for some music from Zimbabwe and I really loved the energy of it, I wanted to create a piece that seemed to flow as naturally as the music, something that wasn’t overly precious or neat that tried to capture the vibes.
Have you ever played music yourself? I have a little bit. I actually got together with a couple other illustrators in Portland last year and we were writing a bunch of songs together. I need to get back to that.

Wijtze Valkema's cup, inspired by the music of The Beach Boys
Coffee: Arabica or Robusta? I’m not that picky, I usually try different roasts from the multitude of roasters here in Portland.
How do you drink your coffee? This depends on my mood and weather. Sometimes I’ll go for the drip and just add some cream. If it’s warm out I might do an iced latte.

Anything interesting projects coming up? Working on some beer labels for a local brewery, and a zine with Tan-N-Loose Press is in the works!

Some artists work with their hands. Some artists work with their brain. Jason is definitely a brain artist. He always puts concept first, execution and style always serve the idea. We love how his creativity translates so well to such a wide range of applications: print, web, packaging, apparel, weird paraphernalia - commissioned or self-initated. It's wonderful how you never know what his newest project is going to look like but at the same time, since it's Jason, you do.
