We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Nanaimo, Canada based graphic designer and illustrator Sebastian Abboud.
What are you working on at the moment? Class prep. I teach a couple graphic design courses at Vancouver Island University here in Nanaimo, BC, Canada. That takes a good chunk of my time. Outside of that, a couple corporate bill-paying design projects. I'm always trying to make time to draw and doodle and experiment with art/illustration stuff, because that's where I want my client work to go!
What is your work process like? Most of everything I post online is a self-initiated experiment, in some way, shape or form. Since most of my client work is design work and my personal work is art/illustration, the process is completely different, for me. I'm always working to re-think everything, from my tools to the way I create, and constantly experimenting with different methods of art making. The vast majority of my work though, is vector-based,created in Illustrator with a mouse.
I usually doodle a whole bunch of little ideas on paper and either scan it in,and re-draw in Illustrator, or just go for it with the Pen tool, based off a sketch. I always set these little creative constraints for myself, whether it be using one consistent stroke-width, or two colours, or whatever. I think it helps to focus the work, and really let the concept shine (if there is one). Lately, I've been trying to work in Photoshop with Kyle T. Webster's brushes, and a tablet, which has been super fun/challenging. In the future, I'd love to paint and work with ink more often, and to work in more of an analog process.
Favorite work snack? Chips and a cold beer.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? Well, my art/illustration stuff is all personal work, and I'm excited about all of it. How's that? ;) I organize an event called Draw By Night Nanaimo, which is a free and open to everyone drawing party. I'm excited to get that going and to build on the creative culture here in Nanaimo.
