We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Amsterdam, the Netherlands based illustrator and designer Frederique Matti.
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now I'm transitioning from working for a boss full time to working freelance! It's very exciting! So naturally I'm working on my portfolio, some self-initiated illustrations and a super exciting branding project for a new drink.
What is your work process like?
I always work with a combination of Illustrator and Photoshop. Sketching on paper was not part of my process before. Since I picked up sketching again I have found that that speeds up my process a lot! I also forgot how much fun it was.
When I work on a new illustration I first work out the concept: what does it need to express? I will do some sketching at this point. Then, ideally, I'll have some time to let the concept settle a bit before I start doing the actual illustration on the computer. Some time in between those phases always pays off. I try to approach client and personal work the same way. It has the same priority because my personal work feeds my client work hugely.
Favourite work snack?
Right now I have a thing for Liga Milk break (that might be super Dutch). I feel completely in touch with my 9-year-old self when I eat them. And always coffee.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about?
I'm always working on my own illustrations on the side. I love experimenting with new textures and techniques. Lately I've been exploring drawing more characters, which I've never really done before. I'm also doing some visual research on a side project about vegetables and fruit. For this project I'm collaborating with Daniël van der Winden, a super awesome website designer.
