We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Bristol, United Kingdom based illustrator Dave Bain.
What are you working on at the moment? I’m collaborating with another Bristol illustrator called Zoe Power. We’re working with South Bristol community groups developing artworks, which we’ll then translate into one or two large-scale murals. The theme of the work is to promote safe driving and safer residential streets. I’m also working on some illustrated branding for a music events company.
What is your work process like? I keep a sketchbook to write and thumbnail ideas down whenever I have them. This helps me develop personal projects, but is also invaluable when working on client projects too, as the two often influence each other. On a job, I’ll draw out as many ideas, roughly, to get a feel for the brief and to get as much out of my head as possible. By seeing it across the sketchbook page, the illustration required starts to make sense and interesting connections start to happen between, sometimes, very different and surprising combinations.
Favorite work snack? A guilty pleasure is a ‘Boost’ bar mid-afternoon, which does exactly what is says on the label. I’m trying not to get addicted!
What do you do when you find yourself stuck in the creative process? Fresh air, fresh music and simply taking a moment out often helps recharge and reset my brain. I find that working on a few different projects can also help, allowing time to come back to an image with new eyes is really helpful for spotting ways to improve it.
