We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Honolulu, Hawaii based illustrator and painter Kim Sielbeck.
What are you working on at the moment? I'm spending a lot of time right now designing patterns. I work from Hawaii with a studio back in New York City, and we have a few surface design trade shows coming up in May. I'm also working on a coloring book, and just wrapped up a series of new paintings that are currently on display at Moriby Art + Flea in Honolulu, Hawaii.
What is your work process like? My work process is pretty dependent upon the job. For client work, I'll usually sketch out a few ideas to get the concept and composition figured out. From there, I figure out the colours and style I want to use. Colour has been one of my favourite parts of the process – working with only a few colours can really set the tone, and working in the fashion industry for several years has kept me up-to-date on trends and combinations.
If a job allows enough time, I always try to work by hand, with real paint and paper. I'd much rather paint a piece and scan than work completely digitally, and most people can't tell the difference between the two approaches in the final piece. Most of the pattern design I make is digital, so it's nice to have some variety in process and not stare at a screen all day.
Favourite work snack? Anyone who's ever shared a studio with me can tell you I LOVE microwaved, lightly-salted popcorn. This has only been a recent phenomenon in the last two years or so. But it's perfect for grabbing a handful throughout the day!
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? I make a lot of small, bright papier-mache plant sculptures. I just signed up for a ceramics class, and I'm excited about creating these in a new and interesting way. There are some very talented potters in my family, so I'm hoping I inherited those genes! Additionally I have a few art shows coming up, so I'll be creating a lot of new paintings in the next few months. Painting a mural alongside kids is also something I'm planning!
