We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Nashville, USA based illustrator Kayla Stark.
What are you working on at the moment? I'm currently working on an illustration for a Mario K-Art show (get it? haha!), another piece for Light Grey Art Lab's next exhibition, and self-initiated work to add to my children's illustration portfolio.
What is your work process like? Do you approach client work differently than personal work?
My process for personal and client work is roughly the same. However, when I'm doing personal work it's much more experimental and playful.
But in either case, my process usually goes something like this:
• ideation phase - research, word association, taking lots of walks and thinking about the different possible solutions
• sketching phase - roughly sketch out 3 to 5 thumbnails of different ideas from phase one
• composition phase - after the most successful sketch is chosen I create a more detailed sketch laying out the composition, balance, and more of the details of the artwork. I'll usually leave myself little edit notes on the sketch during this phase.
• final artwork phase - scan the sketch and bring it into illustrator/photoshop to create a finished piece. Although lately I've been working more traditionally with gouache and colored pencil, so instead of taking the sketch onto the computer I would lightly redraw it on bristol paper with a light box and make a final painting.
Favorite work snack? This question is the toughest.... I'm going to have to go with coffee! I don't really eat a lot while I work, but I do drink A LOT of coffee. However, if I do "snack" on something it's usually jalapeno chips.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? Yes! I am going to begin working on a children's picture book soon. It's a story about a "quest for a library card" that I've had in my head for a long while now. Also, I've been getting into making zines lately; I have a couple more (about animals) planned out for future projects. And I co-run an artists studio space in Nashville, TN called The Warren; we always have plans, shows, and events in the works.
