We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Toronto, Canada based illustrator Teddy Kang.
What are you working on at the moment? I am currently working on some of my personal pieces that might be used for an exhibition in Shanghai in this summer, while I am also working on some commercial illustrations.
What is your work process like? Every good work comes from great observation, so I definitely observe a lot during my everyday life; from the way to supermarket to the brunch I got sunday afternoon, etcetera. That's where I get my inspiration from. My work always starts with a messy rough sketch in my sketch book or random paper on my working desk. I develop my idea by drawing on the computer using a graphic tablet step by step, part by part. Approaching client work is different than doing personal work, although the process is somehow similar, but client work always requires me to come up with a couple different ideas for one topic, and have clients or myself choose one of the best among them. Also, the content of the illustration for client work always has to fit the client’s needs.
Favourite work snack? My favourite work so far is my personal work called "What we do in the summer", it is basically what I do every day during the summer: eating, eating and eating.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? Every summer time I create a lot of works about summer. I like to make summer artwork because there’s always a lot of things to do in the summer, a lot of inspiration to draw from, and a lot of dreams to dream. I am now starting a personal project called "this is actually what I want to do", which includes a ton of things that we do in the summer, and this is now my most exciting project to work on.
