We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Manchester, United Kingdom based illustrator Sonny Ross.
What are you working on at the moment? I'm mainly doing client work at the moment but when I have time I'm developing a couple of book ideas. A children's book about a lost cat, an arty book about people watching and in between just focusing on quick editorial jobs.
What is your work process like? When given a brief I usually start by just blindly drawing all the bad ideas that come into my head first, just get them out of the way so I don't get stuck on them. From there I present a rough and proceed to finals. I use the iPad to do almost everything because the brushes I made on there are better than Photoshop, for me at least. Client work is often clouded by what I 'think' the client wants it to be like and it's easy to get caught up in that. Recently I have been trying to keep my personal and professional work very similar, if only to create a sense of authorship within the work. Drawing flowers by day and devils by night will just tire you out I think, so my client work is beginning to look much more like I had a say in it if that makes sense.
Favourite work snack? Oh man, I'm on a diet. How sad is that? No snacks in the studio is kind of a rule for me but when I do it's always always cookies and a massive mug of coffee.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? Yes, for the first time in a few years I am making things to sell in my shop, riso prints and originals. I'm quite excited by it because I don't know if it will pay off or just sit there collecting internet dust. If the first print sells well I will roll more out as I go. But yes very excited for this. Also I started a project in response to the amount of student emails I get for advice, I hate FAQs on websites so every Sunday I'm gonna illustrate a piece of advice, any future student emails can just find them on my Instagram.
