We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Rotterdam, the Netherlands based illustrator Skwirrol.
What are you working on at the moment? I’m currently working on illustrating a short story for kids about a boy and his friends on their first day of a new year at (wizard) school, which has been lots of fun. I’m rounding up the artwork right now and I feel a bit sorry I’ll have to say goodbye to this set of characters.
What is your work process like? Most assignments start with reading through the client briefing. Next, I do some research or search for reference material and make some rough sketches. If there is a main character or set of characters that need to be illustrated I start developing those first. Once my set of characters is good to go I work on the sketches of the complete illustrations with backgrounds and/or settings. At this stage I use my Cintiq and Photoshop. When the sketches are approved by the client I move on to vectors in Illustrator. Here I pick my colours and definite shapes. Once I’ve tweaked the vectors long enough I go back to Photoshop to add some shades and textures to the final image.
Favorite work snack? I think I’ll go with coffee, although I guess that’s not really a snack, but that is what I start with before turning on my computer. Has to be nice coffee though, I prefer a strong espresso with lots of milk in the morning. Preferably in a ninja turtles cup. Combine that with some cookies and I’m good.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? In between client projects I often work on small character illustrations or sketches just for fun or to try out new things. I enjoy drawing characters, animals and/or squirrels so those often reoccur in my personal projects. I’ve also done a few (fabric) patterns in the past and I’m looking forward to exploring that some more in the near future!
