We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet Leeds, United Kingdom based illustrator Ben Boothman.
What are you working on at the moment? I recently finished a re-imagined film poster for a film club based in London. It was great as the brief was essentially “watch the film and do your thing”. Knowing the design is going to print and will be distributed to patrons of the film club makes it extra sweet.
What is your work process like? It’s pretty straightforward. My ideas are usually very well formed in my head before I even get to the sketchbook. I then draw out the idea, which can be quite an intense process as I struggle to leave things that I don’t consider finished. This is also my favourite part of the process – there’s something really liberating about realising an idea on a piece of paper, as if it has been given freedom from my brain. I then take my sketch to Illustrator and re-draw everything using geometric shapes and fun colours.
Do you approach client work differently than personal work? My approach to both is pretty similar. I like to work in a pretty structured way when making personal work and also invite a lot of feedback from my cool illustrator buddies. In this way it doesn’t feel too different to client work.
Favourite work snack? Custard Creams! Everyone in my shared studio is a huge biscuit fiend.
Any personal projects on the side thatyou’re excited about? I’ve started to create a lot more 3D work using Cinema4D alongside my regular 2D illustrations – Discovering the potential of my work in a 3D environment is super exciting!
