We're constantly looking for interesting artists on Instagram. We will be introducing them every tuesday in a series called Introtuesday. Please meet New York, USA based illustrator AJH.
What are you working on at the moment? Lately I have been trying to experiment with different styles. Trying to loosen up a bit and make my illustrations look a little less digital and a little more hand drawn. I have also just recently started putting eyes on the characters that I draw! This might not seem like a very big deal, but when you consider the fact that I have drawn nothing but faceless men wearing suits for the last year it is a big change :)
What is your work process like? All of my finished illustrations were created using an apple pencil and Procreate on the iPad Pro. My process is pretty consistent every time. I will get an idea – usually just popping into my head like a cannonball dropping into a lake – and then I fight to work out the details by sketching and playing around with different colour palettes. Sometimes there is a deep concept or meaning behind the work, sometimes there isn't. I'm not interested in conveying one particular message to other people. My main focus is to make sure that the work is meaningful to me and that I enjoy the process.
Favourite work snack? Black coffee! I am hooked.
Any personal projects on the side that you're excited about? I would like to start working on a series of illustrations that work together to create a larger narrative, maybe a picture book. I spent many years working in schools and have lots of funny stories rolling around in my head of all the funny things that go on between teachers and kids.
